Hi there, I’m Robert. I’m a data scientist and educator based in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, the coldest capital city in the world.

Above all, I enjoy solving problems with data, and I believe strongly in the power of data science to both help people and provide great value to businesses.

I’m currently working at Datafantic where I provide data analysis as a subscription for clients. I’m aiming to shake up the data analytics world by making is simple and easy for small and medium sized companies to access world class data analytics.

Here is a list of my current and past projects.

Current Projects:

  • Datafantic: I use data to tell stories to help us understand the world around us. The blog is a combination of data-driven stories and data science tutorials to answer questions about the world of today.

Selected Past Projects:

I’ve worked on many projects over the years, and here are a few recent ones that are notable.

  • Mongolian Data Stories: I started this data blog in 2018 to tell “the hidden side” of Mongolia through data. I’ve written about everything from air pollution to Tsagaan Sar debt, and I’m always looking for new and interesting ways to understand Mongolia. This blog is now retired and I’ve moved on to other projects.
  • HazeGazer.mn (2020–2023): I designed and built a web application to facilitate community engagement around air pollution and respiratory illness. Uniquely this web app used Facebook Messenger as the primary method of data collection. Funded via UNICEF, UNDP, and People in Need Mongolia. This project stopped in 2023.
  • Air Pollution Machine Learning Competition (2020): The competition was organized by Machine Learning Ulaanbaatar (MLUB) and funded via UNICEF, UNDP, and People in Need Mongolia. I provided historical data and helped the competition organizer with some background in air pollution.
  • Hack Inequality Data Journalism Hackathon (2019): Co-organized Mongolia’s first Data Journalism Hackathon. Teams of journalists competed to “hack inequality” by creating stories using open data. Funded via DW Akademie and partnered with the International Finance Corporation, the Press Institute of Mongolia, and the Mongolian Center for Investigative Reporting.
